On the 23rd of March 2015, a 6.4 sizeable magnitude earthquake hit the border of Chile and Peru around 10:51 am.It is believed that the quake’s epicentre was 33 kilometres southeast of Chile and had a depth of approximately 128 kilometres.Chile is one of the world's most seismic countries and is prone to tsunamis because of the way the Nazca tectonic plate plunges beneath the South American plate, pushing the Andes cordillera ever higher. Local citizens from Peru, Arica,Tarapaca and Arequipa reported feeling the quake. Around 6 people are believed to have died during the earthquake. |
